I only wish we’d had more time to spend in Madison – our two nights and one day wasn’t enough to get it done. Continue reading

chicago (via michigan)
Back in the U.S.A.! We crossed through the border in Sarnia on the Canadian side right where the St Clair River empties into Lake Huron. In long ago days when I was a sales rep for a Canadian educational book publisher, my territory spanned all of Ontario, and the picturesque town of Sarnia was always at the end of the line. Today I get to cross the line. We’re in Michigan, heading to the Detroit suburb of Farmington Hills to visit fellow Van fans Liz and Steve Wood for a couple of days. Sit back, relax, put the stereo on and listen to some Van. Poolside. Continue reading
westward through ontario
Heading south from Tweed we spend an afternoon and evening in Belleville, catching up with friends from my libertarian days in Toronto, Karen and Herb, and my friend Nancy from my school days, when we both attended Grade 13 at Albert College here in Belleville. Continue reading
tweed, ontario
Down one country road and along another from Newburgh, we arrive in Tweed in time for supper with our friends Lynn and Billy. Bridget and I have had an easy day of it, but not so Lynn and Billy, who have spent the day harvesting garlic – digging it up, sorting it and hanging it up, ready for sale. Continue reading
with family in newburgh, ontario
Two weeks in the province of Ontario – a place I left 20 years ago – and we spent it hopping from one town to the next, visiting family and friends for a few days at a time. Not too much time spent sightseeing; rather, lots of sit-down time over food and drink, reconnecting after years of being away. Continue reading
montreal
One day in Montreal is not anywhere near enough time to get in all the highlights that this city has to offer, so all we could do was pick one and go for it. Continue reading
murder in quebec brings down government
About an hour southwest of Quebec City lies the small town of St Jacques de Leeds in the Eastern Townships. Today the sleepy town belies a history that changed the direction of a nascent Canada. It’s a story involving Bridget’s ancestor, one Robert Corrigan. We’ve come to Leeds to find out that story Continue reading
quebec city
The remainder of our week in the province of Quebec begins with a whirlwind 24-hour visit to the provincial capital. Arriving midafternoon, we checked in at the residences of Laval University, with its affordable lodging and a place to park the car. Catching a bus heading into downtown, we debarked at the entrance to rue St Jean, gateway to the section of the old city that sits high on the hill. Continue reading
gaspe peninsula
We wake up to an overcast day to start our drive around the Gaspe Peninsula. We could have wished for clear skies and a sunny day, but are glad, at least, that rain isn’t in the forecast. Continue reading
new brunswick
The second leg of our road trip begins. We made our getaway from New Hampshire on Sunday, July 1 – Canada Day – and most appropriately, Canada is our destination. Shooting up through Maine on I-95, we cross the border into New Brunswick at Woodstock and make our way along the Trans Canada Highway to the little town of Harvey, south of Fredericton. Continue reading
