May 5 – Cinco de Mayo – This is one of those holidays that usually passes me by. Sequestered as I am up in northern New England, Mexican independence doesn’t come up in conversation much – I’m not sure I’d know which side I should be drinking for. But we’ll be in Denver for the cocktail hour, and I’m sure we’ll be celebrating something. Continue reading

big sur
As we drove through Big Sur on our way to Andrew Molera State Park a few miles to the north, where we were hoping to pitch our tent for two nights, I was surprised to see that Big Sur is not a town at all, but instead, like Coney Island in co. Down in Northern Ireland, it is merely a spot on the map, and before you know it, you’ve passed right through it. A store here, an inn there and a few restaurants scattered along Highway 1 and that’s it, except for signs for campgrounds along the way. That’s what we’re here for – a couple of nights of camping and checking out the vistas here by the ocean in Central California. Continue reading

Our last stop in Texas – El Paso – up in the northwest corner of the state, is a 577-mile scenic drive from Austin. Scenic, of course, is in the eye of the beholder. We were warned that it was a long and boring drive, but we found lots to look at and admire on the eight hour drive. Continue reading
