We have just two more weeks in Canada, and it’s all British Columbia – first, we’re heading to the coast and down to Vancouver, then it’s over to Vancouver Island, before heading back to the mainland and off to Washington state. Continue reading

family fun
In the weeks before we headed out on this road trip of ours, Bridget and I pored over the map of North America, looking at all the places we could go. Very few of those places had a date stamp on them. In fact, just three – New Orleans for Mardi Gras; Austin, Texas, for SXSW; and Golden, British Columbia, for my niece’s wedding on August 25. Continue reading
alberta rockies
The Alberta Rockies, along British Columbia’s southeast border, are the heart of Canada’s natural wonderland. Beauty is always in the eye of the beholder, but believe me, this part of the world is a gem, particularly if you like mountain lakes, glaciers, jagged peaks and alpine meadows. It’s one scene after another. Bridget and I have a few days to explore the area before heading east into Alberta’s foothills to visit family in St. Albert and Calgary. Continue reading
beautiful british columbia
Whoever came up with British Columbia’s provincial motto got it absolutely right. Like the license plate says: “Beautiful British Columbia.” Bridget and I are going to tackle the province in two slices, interrupted by a trip in the middle that will take us to western Alberta to visit family and other fun stuff. We’ve carved out a week for our first B.C. slice, which begins in the town of Nelson, in the West Kootenay Rockies. Continue reading
movin’ to montana
… just to raise me up a crop of dental floss (sorry, I couldn’t resist …thanks, Frank Z)
But indeed, from Yellowstone in Wyoming we moved on to Montana – just passing through on our way up to Canada. Continue reading
grand teton and yellowstone national parks, wyoming
Up in the northwestern corner of Wyoming is Yellowstone National Park, with its famous Old Faithful, one of the many, many geysers in the park that randomly spout to the delight of the many, many tourists drawn to the place. Less well known, and just to its south, is Grand Teton National Park Continue reading

madison, wisconsin
I only wish we’d had more time to spend in Madison – our two nights and one day wasn’t enough to get it done. Continue reading
chicago (via michigan)
Back in the U.S.A.! We crossed through the border in Sarnia on the Canadian side right where the St Clair River empties into Lake Huron. In long ago days when I was a sales rep for a Canadian educational book publisher, my territory spanned all of Ontario, and the picturesque town of Sarnia was always at the end of the line. Today I get to cross the line. We’re in Michigan, heading to the Detroit suburb of Farmington Hills to visit fellow Van fans Liz and Steve Wood for a couple of days. Sit back, relax, put the stereo on and listen to some Van. Poolside. Continue reading
westward through ontario
Heading south from Tweed we spend an afternoon and evening in Belleville, catching up with friends from my libertarian days in Toronto, Karen and Herb, and my friend Nancy from my school days, when we both attended Grade 13 at Albert College here in Belleville. Continue reading
