In my opinion …

Opinions are worth about a dime a dozen — well, probably more like 17.5 cents, what with inflation. Even so, they’re still cheap. And maybe that’s their problem: They’re so cheap, everyone can afford to have them by the bucketload. I am not exempt. I have an opinion on most anything — just ask anyone who knows me.

Opinions are just opinions. I have mine; you have yours. I respect yours as much as I do mine. True, I like mine more, but the same should hold true for you. Why would you hold an opinion you didn’t like?

I typically don’t argue with people about their opinions, and I’m not about to start now. But in the spirit intended, here’s my opinion about an opinion voiced by a writer of a newsletter I subscribe to. Let’s call her Begonia. Begonia was discussing the sorry state of affairs at the Washington Post — namely, the state brought on by owner Jeff Bezos of Amazon fame. The gist of her opinion was what a bad man this Bezos is, decimating free speech at WaPo and sucking up to the president big time. She pointed out Bezos’ ginormous donation to Trump and his standing on the platform with Elon and Trump at the latter’s inauguration ceremony.

My guess is Begonia doesn’t know Bezos any more than I do, which is: I know next to nothing. So after reading her opinion about him and his largesse, I figured I was equally as qualified to offer mine.

To wit. As an American megabillionaire businessman, he knows which side his bread is buttered on — the side that lives in Washington, D.C. And he always has. He gave lots to Trump, and he gave lots to Biden. That’s what megabillionaire businessmen do these days. You be good to me and I’ll be good to you.

It’s my opinion that currying government favor with mega money is a corrupt practice, and I am not in favor. But at least Trump exposed it for everyone to see, instead of pretending the practice doesn’t exist.

As for Bezos trashing the First Amendment at WaPo — ooh, I’ve got loads of opinions about free speech, but another time.

As a boss of mine once said (yelled), “Shut up, Phil! When I want your opinion, I’ll give it to you!”
